So this weekend I had to pick up a car in Cedar rapids Iowa at our favorite body shop. (Golden Hammer auto Body)
I get up nice and early and load up the SP 28′ enclosed trailer to my 1 ton Dually pick as I have done many times before… I leave The shop at 12 noon on the dot just as planned. There was talk of a winter snow “event” coming through the area. No big deal… I have driven in snow before, Right?
So we leave Chicago and it starts to rain… Rain is good. We get outside of Chicago… Downpour, No big deal its just rain. Then the wind picks up… Driving in the wind would be like trying to carry a 4×8 sheet of plywood on a windy day… dosent work well. By this time my gas gauge is is falling faster that than the Dow after Obama took office.
We make it into Iowa and we start to see snow… Big Heavy flakes, I look at my thermometer and it is just above freezing (Thank God) We go a bit further and notice that things are getting slippery as car after car is in the ditch!! I look at my thermometer and it hit 29 degrees!!! OH SNAP!!! Big trailer, 2 wheel drive Dually pick up… Not the optimum conditions for this rig.
So we take the speed down to about 50mph, I am going down a small grade when I noticed the car ahead of me was going slower than me… so I backed off my speed. All of the sudden the back of my truck took off to the left as the trailer was pushing me! So basically I was in a drift at around 50 mph with a huge trailer in tow!!! I counter steered all i could to stabilize the the sideways action that the trailer was forcing. I knew if I hit the brakes on the truck it would all be over resulting with a jackknifed trailer and me in a ditch. So with my cheetah like reflexes and my awesome driving skills I hit the trailer brake controller to slow the big ass white thing behind me… SUCCESS!! the truck came back on the road and all was good.
We get a bit further and the snow was so heavy that I literally could not see. then as fast as it started… it stopped only to turn into sleet. More and more cars ended up in the ditch sometimes 5 and 6 at a time!!! At one point traffic stopped and we could not see why… as we got closer we see this…

Car flip
This slowed things down a bit…
to make a long story short we made it back to Chicago without incident with the car that we had to pick up!I am on my way to Texas and then Tampa to drop off/pick up some other cars, So i will let you know if anything happens on that trip!

I know what thats like I saw that and worste when I was driving to and from Fargo ND to Chicago.
Glad nothing went wrong and your safe!
When I see bad weather ahead, I look for the next exit ramp in cities that have hotel.motel in case I get stuck for a day or two. I will no longer risk pulling a loaded trailer in bad weather.
